Volunteering

Case studies / Stuart Smiles

Stuart Smiles

Stuart was referred to the MV Project in 2004 by his Connexions Personal Advisor.  Stuart had completed a course at his local college but had suffered negative experiences of bullying.  His confidence was low and he was no longer engaged in any positive activity.

Robin Fry, VODA’s MV Co-ordinator, met with Stuart to discuss volunteering opportunities.  Stuart was keen to try it out.  He began volunteering as a helper at Percy Hedley, supporting the drama and music group.

Since then, Stuart has made great progress as a volunteer.  His confidence is at an all time high and he has developed a range of news skills and experiences.  Some of Stuart’s achievements include:

  • Receiving National MV Awards for completing 100 and 200 hours of volunteering
  • Completing the Bronze Youth Achievement Award
  • Being nominated for the 2004 North East MV of the Year Award
  • Attending a royal reception at Buckingham Palace during the Year of the Volunteer 2005, and speaking to the Queen
  • Building his confidence to be able to travel independently on public transport
  • Taking part in a 10 day youth exchange in Palermo, Sicily
  • Speaking at VODA events such as last years AGM
  • Helping to organise the 2005 North East MV of the Year Awards Event
  • Attending two residential weekends
  • Helping to plan and run the Youth Voice FM radio station
  • Taking part in a range of one day Active Youth challenges including gardening, beach tidies and horse care

“Volunteering has helped me gain confidence.  I enjoy volunteering because it can make a big difference to help other people.”
