Volunteering

Case studies / John Sharkey

Volunteer Case Study Form
To be filled in by volunteers and used by VODA to promote volunteering

Name: Jonathan Sharkey  Age: 18

How did you get involved in volunteering?
(How did you find out about it?  Why did you want to do it?)

I spoke to my Connexions Personal Advisor and he arranged a meeting with Robin from Millennium Volunteers.  I wanted to find out what volunteering was all about.

What things have you done as a volunteer?
(Where have you volunteered?  Who have you volunteered with?)

I have been a volunteer for the last 2 years helping out at the VODA office with photocopying, mailings, typing and other admin duties.  I have also been involved in MV and Active Youth events doing gardening, working at the stables, attending award parties, and working towards my Youth Achievement award.

How has volunteering helped you?
(What skills have you learned?  How has it changed you?)

Volunteering has helped me learn new skills such as answering the phone, using the photocopier, getting to the office on time and writing press releases.  I have also gained more confidence.

What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer?
My favourite thing about volunteering is getting to know the staff and working with them.

I am happy for this information to be used by VODA in promotional materials to encourage others to volunteer
